Response to The Island Within

I feel the symbol of this poem is the remembrance of who he fell in love with while on his trip. He describes his first interaction with her and how he can still remember all of the things that took place. For example, he describes what she was wearing, what she made for him and the stories they talked about together. He remembers the porch light of her Victorian home, the red-velvet heels she wore dancing, the cup of coffee she made and the slice of flan she served. In this poem he explains how the distance between them is hard but the memories they share keep them together. Then he describes her as a person anyone could forgive. Overall, he talks about his experiences and how those interactions still stick with him today. That’s why I feel the symbol was the remembrance of their meeting.
