The focal point in the image is the girl in the center. The artist draws our eyes here by placing her in the center. He wants us to focus one her and the things surrounding her throughout this image. The girl is staring at a gramophone. This gramophone stands out because of its color. The birds are circling around, possibly going in and out the of the exits. You also see the shadow of the girl which does not match her actual posture. I feel like this was another thing that the artist wanted us to pay attention. I feel like this was done to show that the girl was stuck but wanted to move or fly away with the owls. The artists has added neutral, cool and warm colors throughout. You are immediately drawn towards the warm colored things because they stand out the most. The image of the train makes you think of departure, the owls symbolize wisdom and the music symbolized the sounds that the girl was trying to hear or find.

The Bluest Eye: Afterward
When Morrison mentions this I believe that she means that beauty comes from within not from what was perceived. In this case I feel that this was mentioned to correlate with Pecola. Pecola wanted blue eyes so much that it made her go crazy. She thought everyone ignored her because they were jealous. We see this when she talks with her imaginary friend. Pecola continuously talks about her blue eyes and how her eyes were the bluest of them all. Then we see how she continuously makes her imaginary friend tell her that her eyes are the bluest. Morrison used this as example to tell us that beauty comes from within and we should not try to be like anyone but ourselves. Pecola could not find beauty in herself so she looked for it elsewhere. As a result we see how trying hard to be someone your not can drive a person crazy. Overall, Morrison mention’s this quote to explain Pecola’s experiences.
Cholly
what does the section about cholly tell us about him psychologically? How have his experiences as a young man shaped him into the father /man /husband That we see throughout the novel?
This section tell us that Cholly is psychologically unstable because of his experiences at a young age. He dealt with being abandoned by his mother, the death of his Aunt Jimmy and the scene with the white hunters in the field. He witnessed and experienced these at a young age and did not know how to understand it all at once. These experiences lead to built up anger and guilt. Cholly did not understand the role of a father because he grew up without one. He found this figure in others around him. He does not know how to express love like a normal father would. Instead he goes way pass this and treats his daughter as equal to his wife. Cholly fell in love with his wife Pauline but was abusive to her when they got married. This changes when he rapes his daughter Pecola when he is drunk and filled with guilt. Throughout this novel we see how there was two sides to the incident and how Cholly was still wrong in both point of views.
The Bluest Eye (97-131)
In this section I felt that one of the most significant symbol was the cobbler. The cobbler scene represented difference with in each race and class. Even though Pauline’s daughter was badly burned by the cobbler spilling she only focused on her employer’s daughter. She beats her daughter instead of comforting her as she did for her employer’s daughter. In this scene we see how class came into play. White was considered superior in both eyes of each race. You would think that a mother would be more considerate of her own child but in this case this was not true. Another thing that stood out during this scene is how rude she was to Pecola and her friends and how nice she was to her employer’s daughter. She yelled at them and said harsh things while when it came to the little girl she was sweet and calm. These example show the conflicts the characters face when it comes to race and class.
Black Museum and The Bluest Eye
In Black Museum and The Bluest Eye we see how they want to get in the mind of the viewer or reader and see it through another person’s point of view. In Black Museum they are trying to figure out the feelings of one person and see if another person can experience the same. In The Bluest Eye we are reading the story through a child’s perspective and what experiences are faced. Seeing situations through another point of view helps you connect more to was is being read or viewed. Both of these titles show how even though you can see something through another view it is not always positive. Later on we see how race comes into play throughout both. When it came to Clay the prisoner we see how he was treated badly for a crime he possibly did not commit. This can be compared to a scene in Morrison’s novel. The scene where Pecola was blamed for injuring Junior’s cat just by her appearance. Another comparison between the two would be the abuse of power. In Black Museum this is shown when they consistently shocked Clay. In Morrison’s novel when Rosemary felt that she was above Claudia and Freida just, because she was white and came from a upper class family. Throughout both we see how a course of action needs to be taken in order for something to change. Looking at the video a viewer can imagine how long he had this museum open and how no one saw this as a bad thing. In the end we see how it took the girl which was his daughter to change the whole situation.
The Bluest Eye, Dick and Jane
This insertion is used at the beginning of the story to prepare the reader for what it to come in the story. Having the Dick and Jane part lets us know that the story is going to be told from a child’s perspective. In Dick and Jane we see how the child wants her family and pets to play with her and explains their reaction to her suggestion. This helps the reader see her thoughts and feeling through her own view which is a child’s point of view. In The Bluest Eye we see how this insertion relates to what Claudia is explaining about her life and her family. We are reading about her perspective as child and how she notices how adults really do not acknowledge a child’s opinion or suggestion. In this story we get to see her side and witness the same feelings she is going through. Dick and Jane compares to Claudia because we see how having a happy home/environment does not mean that the actual person in the home is actually happy.
Response to The Island Within
I feel the symbol of this poem is the remembrance of who he fell in love with while on his trip. He describes his first interaction with her and how he can still remember all of the things that took place. For example, he describes what she was wearing, what she made for him and the stories they talked about together. He remembers the porch light of her Victorian home, the red-velvet heels she wore dancing, the cup of coffee she made and the slice of flan she served. In this poem he explains how the distance between them is hard but the memories they share keep them together. Then he describes her as a person anyone could forgive. Overall, he talks about his experiences and how those interactions still stick with him today. That’s why I feel the symbol was the remembrance of their meeting.
Lahiri Post
Yes, there is a protagonist in this text. I believe that the protagonist is Shukumar even though this text focuses on both him and his wife Shoba. We get more details about Shukumar more than his wife. For example, we learn more about what he does and his feelings throughout this text. While we only know the basics about Shoba. Yes, we do know what she does and how she feels but it doesn’t get as in depth as Shukumar’s parts in this text. Throughout this text we learn how Shukumar feels about different situations and about the different ways he tries to fix these problems. I think the author made this decision in order for us to get in the mindset of at least one of the main characters. This helps us to understand what’s going on from a different standpoint.
Run, Mourner Run
In this story the main character dean struggled with himself. He didn’t want to do what Percy wanted him to do at first but then later on he goes along with it. In which the swing represents this. It’s a back and fourth/push or pull kind of situation. Dean thought hard about if what he was told to do was really something he was interested in. When he was told the job that Percy wanted him to do, he asks himself if this will really benefit him in the long run. This changes when money and a promotion from his job was added. He thinks about how the money and job promotion offered could benefit him and his mother overall. He then goes along with Percy’s plan from there. As the story continues he continues to question himself. This is why I believe its a person versus self conflict.
The Negro Page
When I look at this image I immediately notice a difference in social status. The first thing I noticed is that the two men are dressed in a way that flaunts wealth. They are also on the side with the horses instead of the same side as the little boy. Whereas the boy is dressed with less nobility. He is also on the side with the other animals in this image. To me this creates the imagery that he is being compared to being in the same position as these animals. I only say this because back when there were African slaves they were treated and compared to animals. They were only used to do the work that the wealthy wanted them to do. Back then Africans were below others and had to do with others had to say in order survive. If they didn’t there were many consequences.
